Miniature Roses

Would Smell As Sweet By Any Other Name

Miniature Roses are perhaps the best roses of all.  They have dense foliage and most are hardy dwarf plants.  They are good as a border in a sunny spot around the garden - maybe around larger roses.

Palace Rose They can also be used to create a miniature hedge, which should only rarely need trimming, because of the compact growth.  Miniature roses, like this potted Palace rose, pictured on the left are excellent growing in tubs or pots in a sun-drenched spot.  They tend to get less foliage disease than normal roses and there is frequently less need to spray them.

Just recently there’s been a great range of new varieties of miniature roses that have been produced in the U.S.A.  Miniature roses now come in a broad range of colours, from light red to deep red, mauve and orange-apricot, yellow and white.  They grow to around half a metre (18”) tall or even less.

Some of the best are white or cream with stripes of bright red in the middle.  Miniature roses have been grafted onto the stems of taller growing roses with magnificent results.  Three different varieties can be grafted onto each stem, for instance, red, white and stripped all on the one stock.

Tree Rose - Red & White two-toneIn the United States and France, many breeders are conducting experiments to produce an indoor rose, and also a variety which is between a miniature and a full-grown rose in size.  Some of these are called mini-floras, and we can see an example in this beautiful two-tone red and white tree rose.  Few miniature roses are extremely perfumed, so select yours carefully.  An added bonus with the miniature roses is that they are just about thorn-less.
