Advice For The Apprentice Gardener

Most plants grown in Australia are soil adaptable but getting a few gardening tips will make you aware that garden soil changes and needs amendment every so often in order to keep plants healthy.

The very best gardening tips that take precedence over all garden advice when it comes to having healthy plants is to take care of your soil.  Soils are the basis of every good garden and it pays to get some expert knowledge and some gardening tips and advice, if you wish to achieve pleasing results.  One of the very best gardening tips one can ever receive is to feed the soil of your garden.  This can be done by placing composted material on the bare earth and mixing it in well with organic fertilizer, such as cow manure.  This is best done in the winter.  Another one of the most popular gardening tips is to go and gather leaves from parks and other areas, and then bury  them in your garden.  The decomposing leaves will produce food for Red Wiggler Worms and micro-organisms to eat, thereby providing the garden with humus.

Understanding soil is vital to achieve successful gardening, because it is the plant’s food source.  Soil is made up of mineral particles from weathered rock mixed with living and dead organic matter, air, and water.  Microorganisms and nitrogen-rich nutrients in these rice-sized pellets help jump start the composting process, so you'll get finished results more quickly. Use in the Big Bin Composter or in any composter.  Compost Plus is specially formulated to compost leaves and lawn clippings Use with any composter for faster results One box treats 20 cubic feet of dry material Contains a proprietary blend of beneficial microorganisms 2 lb. box Treats 16 bushels (20 cu. ft.) of dry material

Soils are classified in many ways.  The two most common gardening tips are made on the basis of soil texture or soil profile.  Texture is determined by particle size and can be assessed by ‘feel’.  If soil feels gritty and will not stick together, even when moistened and worked between the fingers and palm of the hand, it is referred to as sand.  If it is cohesive enough to form a ribbon, 25mm long (1 inch), it is loam.  If it is smooth and pliable and handles like plasticine when moistened and worked, it is referred to as clay.  If there is a lot of silt present, the soil will feel silky and may be classified as a silty loam.

There are several other combinations such as sandy loam or clay loam.  The general rule on soil gardening tips is that the more clay particles there are present, the stickier and harder to work a soil becomes.  Therefore, sandy and gravelly soils are usually referred to as ‘light’ soils and because the heavier a soil is, the more water and nutrients it will generally hold, but it is more difficult to work and has poor drainage.  As plants are mainly composed of water, they have a tendency to be influenced by the movement of astral or cosmological bodies that are powerful enough to move the oceans.  Planting during the different phases of the moon has been carried out successfully for centuries and for the  gardener it can increase crop production and provide more vigorous plants.  The avid gardener can get more information by clicking the banner below.

Soils that have been produced from sandstone or beach sands are usually sandy throughout.  They are well drained but the two gardening tips to be aware of is that they are low in fertility and water holding capacity.  Soils formed from shale or volcanic rock such as basalt are usually loamy to clayey in texture with more clay being found at depth.  Providing that they are managed so that they remain crumbly and well drained these soils are suitable for growing plants.  When rock or an impervious clay layer occurs reasonably close to the surface it is usually necessary to install sub-soil drainage pipes.

Now, improving the quality of your soil is as easy as watering your garden. This environmentally-friendly formulation of electrolytes, humic acid and mycorrhizae works on a molecular level to break the chemical bonds that tie up water, air and nutrients. Just dilute in water and apply to the soil every 2-3 months during the growing season. Loosens and aerates compacted soils, even clay.  This Liquid Soil Aerator, eliminates the need for mechanical aeration.  Permits water, air and nutrients to penetrate deep into root zone. Adds beneficial micro-organisms, promotes better water penetration, stronger root growth and increased beneficial soil life. Easy to apply. One quart bottle of concentrate Contains polymer, humic acid and mycorrhizae. Dilute with water as per directions 1-quart bottle covers up to 1/4 acre 3 to 6 oz. treats 1,000 square feet Apply to soil every 2-3 months during growing season.

To the gardener making full use of these gardening tips, is very important and other significant classifications include colour, pH (check this if your plants are stunted and no insect infestations are apparent), drainage (largely dictated by texture), soil depth, nutrient content and the amount of useful living organisms present in the soil.  Red, brown, black or grey soils support plants equally well if the right species are chosen.  Many gardening tips are absolutely valuable to be aware of, such as the colour of the soil darkens, soil depth and useful soil organisms are increased and soil pH is altered with the addition of organic matter.
